
Educational and Professional Background:
Lydia A. Sausa received both a Master of Science in Education degree in Human Sexuality Education, and a Ph.D. degree in Education, Culture, and Society with an emphasis in Health Research from the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition, Dr. Sausa is a Certified HIV Prevention Counselor, and a Certified Sexuality Educator through the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT). Dr. Sausa is an award-winning researcher, dynamic national trainer, and innovative adjunct professor with 12 years of experience in the field of health and HIV prevention education, training, and research. He has conducted transgender HIV prevention research and coordinated California state-wide HIV research projects; provided over 125 comprehensive capacity building trainings throughout the United States for health professionals about transgender health and evidence-based HIV interventions and services; and has taught 14 different graduate and undergraduate courses on sexuality, health, and transgender studies. In addition, he has a number of publications about the needs of transgender communities in education, HIV prevention, and health care.
As an Adjunct Faculty member, Dr. Sausa has taught at the University of California, Berkeley in the Graduate School of Social Welfare, San Francisco State University in the Human Sexuality Studies Program, the City College of San Francisco in the Health Education and Community Health Studies Department and the Interdisciplinary Studies Department, and the Pacific School of Religion through the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies in Religion and Ministry. In addition, he has presented and guest lectured at over 50 international, national, and regional conferences and universities including: Stanford University, the University of California, San Francisco's Medical School, the University of California, Berkeley, Princeton University, New York University, the University of Pennsylvania, the International AIDS Conference, the National HIV Prevention Conference, the American Public Health Association's (APHA) Annual Meeting, and the American Psychological Association's (APA) Annual Convention.
Dr. Sausa is currently the Curriculum Development & Training Administrator at the Center of Excellence for Transgender HIV Prevention in the Department of Family and Community Medicine in the School of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. The Center of Excellence for Transgender HIV Prevention is a ground-breaking California state-wide initiative of the California Department of Public Health, Office of AIDS and the University of California, San Francisco's Center for AIDS Prevention Studies (CAPS) and the Pacific AIDS Education Training Center (PAETC).
